What is an Uncle / Ruben Ariola (Nephew)
An uncle to me is someone who taught your big brother some of the things your big brother taught you. When your father is not around, your uncle sometimes serves as a surrogate father. But most of all he is the brother of one of your parents, he is blood. Jose was all that and more to me.
When he was on leave from the Air Force, I remember being amazed at how long he could sleep. I remember him telling my brothers, Peter and Andy, and I stories about his escapades in the military. On Pacific Street in Brooklyn, we all slept in one big room and he use to tell us scary stories. Being the youngest, Jose and my brothers would sometimes shut the lights at night and scare me. I didn’t think it was funny then, but I did the same to all my little cousins when I use to baby-sit them in the summers at Glenmore Ave.
There were many times as a kid, when I needed money. Jose would always find minor errands for me to do for him so that I could earn some. In the summer of 1963, I foolishly rode my bike with my eyes closed and crashed into a parked car around the corner of my house. I managed to get up and limp home with blood cascading from my mouth and hand. Jose immediately picked me up in his arms, carried me to his car and took me to the hospital.
Both my uncles Jose and Junior were sharp dressers and I remember Jose showing me his wool worsted suits, saying that its collar should not be ironed flat in the front and it should have a roll. He also showed us how to spit shine shoes. I retained those lessons and when I started working on Wall Street, I wore quality suits and always had my shoes polished.
And finally, I remember our last face to face conversation at Melissa’s house in Staten Island. We reminisced about the time when the whole Garcia clan was living in the same apartment building at 302 Glenmore Ave. Grandma and all her adult children had apartments in the building; uncles, aunts and all the little cousins. We both smiled and agreed on how great that was.
Jose I will miss you and always have loving memories of you, your nephew Ruben. Close

Life is a journey we all must embark on and throughout our lives we experience joy, happiness, sadness, pain and sorrow. We embrace the good and the bad and most of all we are thankful for everything we accomplish. The people we meet are kept close to our hearts because they impact us and leave deep imprints in our lives. I came across your family years ago and since then I have learned to appreciate each and every member, most of all I had the opportunity to meet a wonderful man! Your experience, your wisdom, your resilience, and your passion were all evident in the way your lived your life. I am very thankful for having you in my life...Your character was exemplary and very few men are nearly half the father your were...Although you are no longer in this crazy world, I know that you are in a better place watching down on us...You will be in my every prayer and I know that one day we will go sky diving like we planned...only this time we will not need a parachute. =-)
You are definitely missed but very well remembered...I can not even begin to explain what great impact you were in my life....
You were a loving husband, father and friend. We had our ups and downs but we made it thru for 32 years. You were a great provider for your family and a great teacher to your children and a great husband. I will always have you in my heart and though I know we will see each other again I miss you very much. I feel like there was still so much to say to each other. I honestly did not think it would happen so quickly. I promise you that I will do my very best to be strong as you would want me to be until we meet again.

I never got to really spend alot of time with you, as we lived so many miles apart, but your presence lives on in all the great memories our family shares. My mother, your niece, told me about how you always looked out for her when she needed you. My grandmother told me stories of the mischievious things you all did as children in PR. It is the stories like those that will keep your memory alive forever and will bring comfort to us all knowing your still with us as one of God's Angels. There are no words to express what you as a family are going through at this moment. Trust that God has him watching over you and loving you still from above, wearing his NY cap and a big smile on his face.
It is a hard time for the family, but realize how close and strong your knots are as a family regardless of the miles apart. I am proud of knowing a family like yours that is really united in the good and bad. Your support for each other is very admirable.
You will pull through. You will experience a different life at this point, one in which you will think of Jose often and smile; one in which you will feel his presence around you at times. THERE AREN'T THAT MANY FATHERS THAT WOULD DRIVE HUNDREDS OF MILES TO SEE THERE DAUGHTER FOR ONLY A FEW MINTUES OR A FEW HOURS REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER AND RETURN HOME THE SAME DAY. THAT SHOWED ME THAT YOU WOULD ALWAYS BE THERE FOR ME NO MATTER WHAT AS THE SONG SAYS ( AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH AIN'T NO RIVER WIDE ENOUGH TO KEEP ME FROM GETTING TO YOU BABE). YOU ARE LOVED BY MANY, YOU ALWAYS TAUGHT US TO BE HONEST AND RESPONSIBLE, YOU ALWAYS SAID DON'T CHARGE MORE THAN YOU CAN PAY WORDS TO LIVE BY, FROM JOSE GARCIA. I JUST MOVED TO FLORIDA, I THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE MORE TIME WITH YOU BUT THANKFUL FOR THE TIME I HAD TO BE BY YOUR SIDE. I'M SORRY YOUR SON JOSEPH COULDN'T BE HERE, YOU KNOW HE LOVES YOU VERY MUCH AND WILL MISS YOU DEARLY FOR YOU ARE THE ONE THAT SHOWED HIM LOVE. YOU ARE A GREAT MAN!!
